Our Agribusiness Startup-Dembo Keita

Meet Dembo Keita, Founder of Salimatou and Dembo's Agro entrepreneurship Farm(SDAFA) located in Sutukonding Village, Wuli West District, Upper River Region. Dembo is engaged in producing and selling tree seedlings, vegetables and fruits. The business is registered and has been operating for two years. The farm specializes in sustainable and diversified agricultural practices, including crop cultivation and livestock production.Currently, the farm has four (4) employees who work tirelessly to ensure the success of the business. As an agricultural enterprise, SDAFA Farm recognizes the importance of addressing the challenges faced by smallholder farmers in the region. Through sustainable and diversified farming practices, Dembo aims to improve food security, increase income, and promote environmental conservation. Dembo is currently enrolled in our four months training program called the Ye! Agribusiness incubation program for startups. Dembo is equipped with skills on digital marketing, digital literacy, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and much more. Africell Girls Code Week

Africell with their slogan ‘girls can also code’ conducted this program to empower girls in coding. The program lasted for 2 weeks, and during this time, Africell trained 120 girls on how to code using scratch. The purpose of the training was to expose these young girls to coding and development and also to commemorate the women's month that is why only girls were targeted for this program. The program was held at The Hub and it started on the 14th of March and ended on the 26th of March 2022. 6 different schools participated in the training and all the trainees were certified on the day of the graduation ceremony of the boot camp which took place on Saturday 26th March 2022 at the Ebunjan Theater.

Boot Camp program:Coding Session

Boot camp program at The Hub limited has kick started on the 31st July 2023. The program targets 14 year olds and above. First week began with a coding session in which participants were taken through the introduction to coding and basic knowledge on java script. This will help develop their problem-solving and analysis skills, such as finding errors and thinking logically. Amran Gaye, Founder of Digital Jollof and a Technical solution engineer at Google was the tutor for the coding session

Business Management & Client Relations Training for Startups

The Ye! Agribusiness incubation program for startups on Business management training was held on the 17th March, 2023 at The Hub. out of 21 participants, 12 of them attended the training. The participants were taught on how to monitor their business by looking at the expenses they make, profits they gain and losses made. They were also given tips on how to effectively and efficiently manage their business and how to train their employees in order to be able to optimize their productivity and performance. The startups were told to treat their customers or clients well as they are the reason for them doing business and without them they cant sell their goods and services. Sadibou Jammeh was the trainer for the Business management Session. Sadibou is a lecturer at the University of the Gambia and the Director of Commerce at the GNPC.

Customer Service Training

The Hub Ltd recently completed a three-day training on Customer Service, which was organised by the Information Technology Association of the Gambia (ITAG). It started on Tuesday 2nd May to Thursday 4th May, 2023. The training was organised for the members of the ITAG association which includes: E-zone, The Hub, ANG Capital and the ITAG staff. The training was meant to equip the members with the essentials of maintaining good customer relationships and developing new skills. Participants were taken through dealing with customers in a professional way and getting them the best service required. They were taught how to deal with difficult customers and conflict resolution. The participants were also shown ways of developing telephone etiquettes and adapting to customer communication styles. The presentation was done by Pierre Davis, a Technology transformation leader from Seattle, USA

Digital Literacy & Digitization for Cross Border Entrepreneurs

The Hub Ltd in partnership with the International Trade Centre is currently conducting a week of training on digital literacy and digitization for Cross Border Entrepreneurs. The training is being done by the Hub Manager at Farafenni. The participants are being taught on how to create emails and operate online safely. Suwaibou Cham of ITC will also be training them on financial literacy.
The aim of the training is to empower cross border entrepreneurs especially women in getting access to digital markets by being equipped with digital platforms.

Digital Literacy & Photography Training For Startups

The third session of the Ye! Agribusiness incubation program for the startups was held on the 7th and 8th March 2023 at the Hub.The training was attended by 12 of the 21 participants. The entrepreneurs were taken on a two day training on digital literacy and photography. Participants were shown tactics to use when doing research and how to create google forms , docs and sheets for their business. Writing survey forms was also explained to them , this will help them get feedback from their customers , and google sheets for doing their budgets and calculating their expenses. In the second session, participants were trained on how to use their smartphones to snap their products at home and using editing software for a professional picture. Several videos were played for them that showed how other business people used camera tricks at home with their products. The basic skills will help them minimize the cost of paying photographers to snap their products. The trainers were Pa Njagga Jah , assistant manager at The Hub and Sulayman Sanyang, lead at Elevate Studios. Sulayman Sanyang is the founder of elevate studios, a Gambian based multimedia company that specializes in animation, video, branding and digital education. Attendees of the training are entrepreneurs from different sectors. The Agribusiness program is an incubation program hosted by the Hub in partnership with the Ye! Community through the International Trade Centre.

Digital Literacy Training for Entrepreneurs

ELEV8 Studios Gambia has completed a two day training on photography and social mediamarketing as part of the Digital Literacy program The Hub Ltd conducted in collaboration with the International Trade Centre . Sulayman Sanyang Abdul Musawir , founder of ELEV8 Studios Gambia showed the participants ways of snapping their products using mobile phones and editing with professional apps. This will help the entrepreneurs minimize the cost of paying professional photographers to snap their products. The participants were also taught ways to market their products online targeting Facebook and Whats app Business. This training is aimed to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world responsibly, including safeguarding their personal information. It's worth mentioning that the training program had a significant focus on empowering women, with eighty percent of the participants being women. These entrepreneurs are engaged in various industries, including food processing, fashion accessories, cosmetics, and poultry farming. The participants came from different regions, such as LRR, CRR, URR, and NBR, showcasing the diverse representation. Following the week-long training, all participants will be provided with mentors who will guide and coach them in their businesses. These coaching sessions will play a vital role in helping the entrepreneurs determine their next steps and make informed decisions for their ventures. It's an exciting initiative that will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and success of these entrepreneurs in the digital era.

Digital Marketing & Digitization Training For Startups

Startups were on Saturday 8th April, 2023 taken on a digital marketing & digitization training as part of their Ye! Agribusiness incubation program. The training was held at The Hub and was attended by 14 startups. The entrepreneurs were taught on how to grow their businesses by using social media, especially Facebook. Targeting Facebook as a means to advertise their goods and engage their customers, the startups were told to motivate their customers by doing competitions or giveaways. The startups were shown ways of boosting their products on Facebook through ads and targeting their audience. They were told that engagement of their customers is key because it helps build their brands a loyal community and keeps them in touch with what people think, want and buy. They were advised on making their customers part of their stories by making sure they don't make problems that will discredit their brands. The presentation was done by Sulayman Sanyang , the founder of Elevate studios , a Gambian based multimedia company that specializes in animation , video, branding and digital education. The Agribusiness incubation program is part of the activities The Hub is anchoring as part of the Ye! Community. This incubation program is an opportunity for startups to acquire digital skills, marketing strategies and network with people in the Agribusiness sector.

EPSDP Digital Literacy Program

Over the past three months, The Hub in collaboration with and the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, MOTIE organized a Digital Literacy program for Girls. This was aimed at training female students in grades 7 and 8. The program targeted 25 girls from various schools who were taught digital literacy and soft skills. Considering how fast paced the world is, and how everything is more digital by the day, digital skills have now become a necessity. It is only right that children are equipped with the right tools and knowledge skills from an early age to help them thrive in today's modern world of technology.

Entrepreneurship Training-Incubation

Startups were on 28th April, 2023 taken through an entrepreneurship training as part of the Ye Agribusiness incubation program. The entrepreneurs were given the opportunity to have an open discussion on their business, challenges faced and other business plans. The startups were made to understand that starting a business and keeping up with it might be hard but it takes real determination and responsibility to make it to the next level. One of the startups when asked to mention a general challenge faced by the entrepreneurs said it was “Access to finance”, However they were told that access to finance is not the major problem instead the management of the finance.
Many are given finance or have access to finance but to manage that money tends to be a problem. Samba Faye, a participant who is into plantation Nurseries, said Farmers do have problems in accessing tools and some of these fertilizers to keep up with their productions too.

Habib Bah who is also into Poultry said that the Government should try and see how best they can start using the local eggs we have in the country and stop the importation of eggs. The presentation was done by Suwaibu Cham of the The Gambia Investment & Export Promotion Agency (GIEPA), a national agency responsible for promoting and facilitating private sector investments into The Gambia. This training is done in collaboration with The Hub and the Ye! Community , a chapter of the international trade centre. So far, the startups enrolled in the program have undergone a series of training which includes digital literacy, digital marketing , Taxation and business registration among others.

Financial Training with Elev8 Studio

Elev8 studios in collaboration with The Hub organized a financial training for freelancers. This training was sponsored by the International Training Center (ITC) and the aim was to give the freelancers an understanding of the Wave app which enabled them to record their financial dealings : Creditors, Debtors, sales, purchases, etc. This automates the calculation of their profits and losses. The recent training was held in October, 2021 and lasted for three days covering three key areas. Friday, 23 October 2021) ( Costing) Saturday, 24 October 2021 (Financial Training) Sunday. 25 October 2021 (Digital Marketing Audit) The partners involved were the European Union (EU), Youth Empowerment Project (YEP), International Trade Center (ITC), Information Technology Association of Gambia (ITAG) and ELEV8 Studios.
